Families that came between 1845 and 1860

The list below was made many years ago and needs verification and editing. For each family listed, we need to know when exactly they arrived in the settlement, and where they first located.

  1. Andrew, Robert, James, and John Muir came to Michigan in 1845. They sailed on the ship Trident and arrived in New York City May 28, 1845.

  2. Peter Ferguson came to America in 1845 and arrived in Almont in 1846.

  3. John Millikin came to America in 1845.

  4. William Millikin came to America in 1846.

  5. Adam Watson came to America in 1847.

  6. John Downie and his family came to Almont in 1848.

  7. William Muir and his wife Janet (Gilmour) Muir came to Almont in 1848.

  8. Charles Ferguson and his wife Charlotte (McHardy) Ferguson arrived in New York July 10, 1848, and moved to Almont that same year.

  9. William D. Morton, born in Paisley, Scotland, arrived in New York on July 10, 1848, with his brother John and sister Margaret with their parents William L. Morton and Elizabeth (Buchanan) Morton.  They sailed from Glasgow on the ship Madawasa.

  10. Thomas Mcllwrick came to America in 1848.

  11. Daniel Thompson came to America in 1848.

  12. Robert and Isabella Gray came to America in 1849.

  13. John Stevenson came to America in 1850.

  14. Willian Wiley is listed in the 1850 Federal census living in Michigan with three kids.

  15. John Muir came to America in 1850.

  16. David Paton, age 39 and his second wife Elizabeth (Woodburn) Paton, age 29, came with their seven kids and David’s mother Ann, age 70, and David’s sister Elizabeth, age 45, and her husband John Hamilton. They sailed May 1852 on the ship Conway arriving in New York in June. There are also Marshall, Robertson, and McArthur surnames on the ship manifest.

  17. David Wallace and Catharine McEwan sailed on the ship Mortimer Livingston to New York on August 2, 1852. Also on board were members of the Cochrane family, Charles, Isabella and Cath.

  18. John Borland came to America in 1852.

  19. Dougald Thompson came to America in 1852.

  20. Robert Taylor and his wife Christine (Sommerville) Taylor and their children came to Lapeer County in 1852. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the ship Wacousta, sailing from Glassgow to New York July. Also on board were Christine’s parents Robert age 60 and Christine age 65. They were also traveling with Ann Taylor age 12.

  21. Anna Reid came to America in 1852.

  22. Elizabeth Morton came to Michigan in 1852.

  23. Thomas Mortan and his wife Janet Wilson came to America in about 1853 with their three boys David W., Thomas J., and James W., They arrived in the Scottish Settlement May 9, 1853.

  24. Gavin Hamilton and his wife Ann came to America between 1852 and 1854, with their six kids.

  25. James Craig arrived with his wife Jemima (Wilson) Craig and their three kids to New York May 7, 1853. They were in Bruce Township in the 1860 census. Notice that Thomas Morton and Janet Wilson arrived in New York on May 9. It looks like the families may be connected.

  26. Hugh Reid and his wife Mary (Kerkup) Reid, with their 12-year-old son John K. Reid arrived in Almont in 1854.

  27. William and Janette Anderson came to America in 1854.

  28. James, Kate, and John Rattray came to America in 1854.

  29. John K. Reid came to America in 1854.

  30. John Hamilton and his wife Margaret (from Ireland) came from (through?) Canada with their daughter Margaret between 1855 and 1857.

  31. Charles Morton from Kincairdineshire Scotland came to Genesee County, New York in 1843 and moved to Almont May 1857.
