Families who came before 1845
The list below was made many years ago and needs verification and editing. For each family listed, we need to know when exactly they arrived in the settlement, and where they first located.
The Current List
James Stuart Taylor and his wife Janet Lockhead came to America in 1826 and arrived in Almont, Lapeer County Michigan in 1834.
Neil Gray senior and his wife Mary Wiley arrived in New York in 1827 and came to Almont in August 1832. The 1840 census shows a Hugh Gray and a Neil Gray senior living in Bruce Township in Macomb County and a Neil Gray Jr. in Ray Township.
In 1830, Robert and Elizabeth Hamilton and their son William arrived in America; they came to Bruce Township in Macomb County in 1837.
On June 21, 1831, James Crawford arrived in New York City with his parents, Robert Crawford and Janet (Dickie) Crawford, and five siblings, John, Alexander, Robert, Jane, and Helen. They crossed the Atlantic on the ship Allen. James Crawford arrived in Macomb County in 1833.
James Stevenson came to America in 1833. Arrival date in the Scottish Settlement is unknown.
In 1832, the reverend John Taylor came to Bruce Township as minister of the Scottish Settlement Presbyterian Church.
In 1832, William Robertson and family came to America on the ship Chieftan. The Hopkins family accompanied the Robertsons.
In 1832, Neil Gray junior came to America.
Hugh and William Reid came to America in 1833.
David Taylor, his wife Lemira, and their son David H. arrived in Bruce Township between 1832 and 1833.
James Reside, his wife Margaret and children Mary, John, and Elizabeth come to America in about 1832 on the ship Hero.
Mary Meloine came to New York from Scotland in about 1833. She married William Hamilton; they are in Bruce township in 1837.
James Stuart Taylor and his wife Janet Lockhead came to Almont in 1834.
John and Jenny Wasson came to America in 1835.
John McKay and Jane (Gray) McKay came to America and settled in Oxford Township in Oakland County.
Robert McKay came to America in 1830, lived three years in Baltimore, then Nashville Tennessee for three years, then came with his parents to Oakland County in 1836.
Robert and Elizabeth Hamilton and their son William came to Bruce Township in 1837.
Thomas Morton and his wife Jean (Millikin) Morton settled in Bristol (Almont) in June 1838. Also coming were Jean’s sister Catherine (Millikin) Robb and her husband Samuel Robb, and his brother John Robb and John’s wife Mary Ann (Machie) Robb.
Thomas Stevenson came to America in 1838.
David Cochrane and his wife Christina (Rattray) Cochrane came to America with their ten kids. They arrived in New York City on the Ship Roger Stewart on July 13, 1839.
Hugh Wiley was in Bruce Township for the 1840 census.
William Hamilton and his wife Jean (Downie) Hamilton, with their three kids, William Bruce, Jennette, and Margaret, came to Berlin Township in St. Clair County in 1841.
John L. Hamilton and wife Mary (Dunsmore) Hamilton and their children left Scotland on Jine 5, 1841 and sailed to Montreal Canada, arriving July 22.
John Allan and his wife Janet (Gardiner) Allan came in April 1842 with their daughter Jessie Allan.
George, Mark, and Alexander Harper Braidwood came to America in 1842. They sailed on the Great Lakes ship Lady of the Lake to Michigan.
John and Jennett Reed came to America in 1842.
Gavin Hamilton came to America in 1842.
John and Janet Marshall and their 3-month son Charles came to America in 1842.
David Marshall came to Almont in 1843, later returning to Scotland.
John Millikin with his wife Janet (Reid) Millikin and a nephew John Reid sailed to America in 1844 on the ship Brilliant.
William Wallace and his wife Janet (Bowes) Wallace left Scotland on July 11, 1844 on the ship Alabama arriving in New York on August 29, 1844. They settled in Metamora Township.
Also on the ship Alabama were Jane and John French and William and Grace Stephen.
Robert Borland and his wife Janet (Mair) Borland came to America in 1844. Janet’s sister Marian Mair came with them.
John Braidwood came to America at the age of 7 months. He came with is mother, Mary (age 22) his grandmother (age 72), his aunt Margaret (age20), and with his brother George (age two). They sailed from Glasgow May 24, 1843, on the ship Superb.
John Muir came to America in 1844.
James Morton came to Michigan in 1844.
Hugh Reid and his wife Jennette (Robb) Reid came to Berlin Township in 1844.
